Mind–body
In detail
What counselling can help with
Stress and pain often live in both the mind and the body. Here's what we see most, and how we help.
Anxiety & panic attacks
Anxiety is the most common reason people reach out. It can look like constant worry, or arrive suddenly as a panic attack.
Common signs
- Worry you can't switch off
- Racing heart or tight chest
- Panic attacks
- Avoiding places or people
- Trouble sleeping
- Clenched jaw or tense shoulders
How we help
We use CBT and nervous-system regulation skills to calm your body's alarm system, break the worry cycle, and take small, steady steps back toward the things you've been avoiding.
Jaw clenching? See our TMJ programDepression & low mood
Low mood can creep in slowly, until everyday things feel heavy and the things you used to enjoy don't land the same way.
Common signs
- Low energy or motivation
- Losing interest in things
- Pulling away from people
- Changes in sleep or appetite
- Feeling hopeless or stuck
How we help
With CBT and ACT, we work on gentle structure, kinder self-talk and small actions tied to what matters to you. If it helps, we can add movement with our kinesiology team.
About kinesiologyStress & burnout
Burnout builds when demands outpace recovery for too long, at work, at home or as a caregiver.
Common signs
- Exhaustion that rest doesn't fix
- Irritability or feeling detached
- Headaches and neck tension
- Trouble focusing
- Dreading the week ahead
How we help
We help you find the pressure points, set boundaries and rebuild recovery habits. Stress often shows up as muscle tension, so many patients pair counselling with massage therapy.
About massage therapyGrief & loss
Grief isn't only about death. It can follow the end of a relationship, a health change, a job loss or a big life transition.
Common signs
- Waves of sadness or numbness
- Trouble sleeping or eating
- Guilt or regret
- Feeling alone with it
- Life feeling on hold
How we help
We give you space to grieve at your own pace, with no timeline, and help you carry the loss while finding your footing again.
Trauma & PTSD
Trauma can follow one event or many. Your nervous system can stay on high alert long after the danger has passed.
Common signs
- Flashbacks or nightmares
- Feeling on edge or easily startled
- Avoiding reminders
- Feeling numb or disconnected
- Anger or irritability
How we help
Our care is trauma-informed: you set the pace and choose what to talk about. We start with safety and regulation skills before working through what happened.
Dental fear? See our trauma-informed dental programAfter a car accident: driving anxiety & ICBC
A crash can leave emotional injuries alongside physical ones, and they often get missed.
Common signs
- Fear of driving or being a passenger
- Tensing up at intersections
- Replaying the crash
- Poor sleep
- Feeling short-tempered
How we help
We help you regain confidence on the road, step by step, and coordinate with your physio or kinesiologist. For ICBC claims, counselling in the first 12 weeks after a crash is pre-approved, with no referral needed. Bring your claim number and Personal Health Number, and we bill ICBC directly.
ICBC & direct billingChronic pain & injury stress
Pain that lingers changes how you sleep, move and feel. Over time, stress and pain can feed each other.
Common signs
- Fear of movement or re-injury
- Frustration or low mood
- Poor sleep
- Pacing problems (boom and bust)
- Feeling like no one gets it
How we help
We use evidence-based pain-coping approaches such as CBT and ACT, and work alongside your physiotherapist or chiropractor so your mind and body recover together.

Counselling FAQ
Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?
No. You can book directly. If you're claiming through extended health, check whether your plan needs a referral.
Is counselling covered by ICBC or extended health?
Counselling is covered for eligible ICBC claims, and many extended health plans cover clinical counsellors. We provide receipts and direct bill where we can.
Does ICBC cover counselling after a car accident?
Yes, for eligible claims. ICBC pre-approves up to 12 counselling sessions in the first 12 weeks after a crash, with no referral needed. Bring your claim number and Personal Health Number, and we bill ICBC directly.
What's the difference between a counsellor, a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Counsellors and psychologists both provide talk therapy. Psychologists can also do formal psychological assessments. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose and prescribe medication. Many people start with counselling, and we can help you decide if you need something different.
How many counselling sessions will I need?
It depends on you and your goals. Some people come for a few sessions to build specific skills, while others prefer ongoing support. We check in regularly so your plan stays useful.
Can counselling help with chronic pain?
Yes. Counselling doesn't replace physical treatment, but approaches like CBT and ACT can ease the stress, sleep problems and fear of movement that often come with long-term pain. We can coordinate with your physiotherapist or chiropractor.
Can counselling help with jaw clenching or tension headaches?
Stress often shows up as jaw clenching and tension. Counselling can help, and it pairs well with our TMJ & Jaw Pain Program.
Do you offer counselling for driving anxiety after an accident?
Yes. We support driving anxiety and accident-related stress, and can coordinate with your physical recovery team.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is protected under BC privacy law, and we only share information with your other practitioners with your consent.
